1923 Hallmarked Silver Dove of Peace Car Hood Ornament

A Dove in a serene standing pose, holding an olive branch in its beak. It was a unique special commission in 1923 for Sir James Venour Foulis, Governing Director of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Created in hallmarked silver by the renowned London master silversmith George Buller. Fully hallmarked to the integral radiator cap base, with full 1923 London hallmarks, showing Leopard’s Head, Lion Passant and date letter. The tail of the dove also carries two makers stamps to the rear, and the Lion Passant. Under the olive branch is a further makers stamp. All the hallmarks are clear and deep. The dove is further embellished with garnet eyes and incorporates an integral 1923 Rolls Royce Ghost radiator cap. The Dove holding the olive branch is the crest of the Foulis family of Colinton, Argyll, Scotland, and the Foulis family motto is 'Pax', Latin for peace. Only a handful of solid silver mascots have ever been discovered, as very few were ever commissioned mainly due to their cost at the time. This example being unique is especially appealing due to the wonderful history and association with such an important aristocratic family and historic stately home connections. Simply the ultimate pre-war car mascot representing true 1920's style and impeccable quality.

Absolutely pristine totally original condition. All the hallmarks are clear and deep. The detail on the plumage, feet and general construction are truly outstanding. The wonderful perfect garnet eyes being just the finishing touch to a peaceable design. Mounted on a fine turned wooden display base.
