1920 Driver Bust with Wings Car Hood Ornament

Racing driver bust with Art Deco wings and Calormeter. This is an exceptional mascot indeed. It is based on a charicature by the world renowned artist Geo Ham, of the first professional racing driver of Bugatti cars - Robert Benoit. This was sculpted by M Bertin, one of the foremost mascot designers in France in the 1920's using purest Art Deco style. It is signed below the chin. Complete with the original Bugatti cap and Calormeter still intact. Finished in heavy nickel bronze. It is illustrated in Michel Legrand photocopy book 'Mascottes Fantaisies de 1910-1953', page 333, number 185. Only a handful of racing driver mascots exist.
Dimensions : 70mm high, 130mm long.
Condition : Excellent totally 100% original piece with superb age patination, showing use of age that only the passing of many decades will ever produce. There is absolutely no restoration or replating on this magnificent piece whatsoever. The mounting bolt is still rusted firmly to the original Bugatti cap, which it has adorned from early motoring days. Mounted on a wooden display base.
